Sen. Carper chosen as Ranking Member of Environment and Public Works Committee

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today it was announced that Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.) will be the new Ranking Member on the Environment and Public Works Committee. He replaces Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) who is retiring at the end of her term.

Friends of Earth Climate and Energy Program Director Benjamin Schreiber had the following response to the announcement:

Donald Trump ran on a platform of drill everywhere and appointed a climate denier to head his transition team for the Environmental Protection Agency. It is already clear that the Environmental Protection Agency will face heavy attacks.

The American people do not support this radical agenda. Activists are already taking to the streets to fight back and we are committed to protecting public health and the environment. The majority of Americans did not vote for Donald Trump and we need Senate Democrats to stand together as the last line of defense.

The Ranking Member of the Environment and Public Works Committee will play an important role in stymieing Trump’s assault. It is no secret that Senator Carper has split from the environmental community on a few high profile issues like the Keystone XL pipeline. Moving forward we need to work together to focus on being unified in fighting back Trump’s agenda. Ranking Member Carper must make it clear to the American people that he won’t allow environmental rollbacks to happen on his watch.
