Climate denier Sessions would aid ExxonMobil as Attorney General
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today Senator Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) testifies before the Senate Judiciary Committee in his confirmation hearing to be Donald Trump’s Attorney General. Sessions has openly opposed any investigation into ExxonMobil’s campaign to discredit and cover the scientific facts of climate change in order to maintain their profits. If confirmed, he will likely block any probe of ExxonMobil.
Friends of the Earth Senior Political Strategist Ben Schreiber issued the following statement:
Senator Sessions is unfit to lead the Justice Department and the Senate should reject his nomination. As Attorney General, Sessions will erode decades of civil rights gains and exacerbate environmental injustices. At a time when voter suppression threatens the integrity of our democracy, this divisive nomination will worsen voter intimidation and increase disenfranchisement.
Not only has Senator Sessions worked to make it harder for communities of color to vote, but he has also placed their health below the profits of fossil fuel companies. Senator Sessions is a climate denier who tried to use his office to stop the Attorney General from investigating ExxonMobil’s lies to its shareholders and the American people. As Attorney General, he would appoint the head of the Environment and Natural Resources division that is supposed to protect Americans from big polluters.
Sessions’ record on both civil rights and the environment shows he is no friend of communities who are being decimated by polluting corporations.
