Friends of the Earth urges Senate to filibuster SCOTUS nominee

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In advance of Donald Trump’s announcement of his nomination for the vacant seat on the Supreme Court of the United States, Friends of the Earth urged the Senate to use the filibuster to reject any nominee. This seat has remained vacant for almost a year because Republican leadership refused to consider President Obama’s nominee, Merrick Garland.

Friends of the Earth President Erich Pica issued the following statement:

Democrats must stand with the majority in the streets who see that Donald Trump and his enablers are running roughshod over our Constitution and threatening our Democracy.  Senate Democrats are one of the last remaining checks on Trump’s power and they should not let him make a lifetime Supreme Court appointment.

Majority leader Mitch McConnell attempted to steal this seat by refusing to consider President Obama’s nominee for almost a year.  Anyone who allows Trump to fill the vacant seat will become complicit in the theft. Senate Democrats need to join the resistance that has formed in American people and stand up to Trump. If they don’t, they too will feel the wrath of the American people.
