Centrist Democratic bills lack leadership and action on climate crisis
WASHINGTON, D.C. – At a press conference today, U.S. Representative Derek Kilmer (D-Wash. 6th), chair of the New Democrat Coalition, is set to roll out a series of bills aimed at addressing climate change. The press conference comes weeks after the group of centrist Democrats released a set of lackluster principles for U.S. climate policy.
In response, Nicole Ghio, senior fossil fuels program manager with Friends of the Earth, issued the following statement:
The Democratic centrists continue to lack the courage needed to push for comprehensive and obvious climate solutions. While this package of legislation includes bright spots that would cut methane pollution, clean up coal sites and diversify the economy, as a package, this centrist legislation fails to match the urgency of the climate crisis. Instead of showing the necessary vision and leadership, centrist Democrats continue to support expensive false solutions like nuclear and carbon capture and storage.
With the Senate under Republican control, bills introduced into the U.S. House of Representatives do nothing but send a message. If Democratic centrists stop at half solutions, the climate crisis is only going to get worse.
