WASHINGTON — The Department of Interior just released a report on achieving the U.S. goal to conserve 30 percent of our lands, waters, and ocean by the year 2030, known as 30×30. President Biden originally announced these plans as part of his Executive Order on Tackling the Climate Crisis at Home and Abroad, as the first step toward taking swift and meaningful action to prevent and reverse climate change.  Notably, the report was built with input “from State, local, Tribal, and territorial officials, agricultural and forest landowners, fishermen, and other key stakeholders.”

In response, Friends of the Earth’s Senior Oceans Campaigner, Hallie Templeton, issued the following statement:

President Biden’s administration is listening to stakeholders’ calls for an equitable 30×30 process. It only makes sense to begin the process with the locals who work and live in the areas being considered for conservation. Not only do these communities know the space better than federal officials in DC, but they also can and should be part of the climate and conservation solution.
