Moderate Democrats climate proposal won’t stop climate catastrophe

Market-based plan puts planet at risk

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The New Democrat Coalition, a caucus made up of moderate democrats, yesterday released principles for U.S. climate policy.

In response, Nicole Ghio, Senior Fossil Fuels Program Manager at Friends of the Earth, issued the following statement:

The climate crisis demands real solutions to foster a just transition that puts communities and workers first. Instead, centrist Democrats are pushing market-based solutions that will not generate the change we need in the time we have left. These market based schemes include cap and trade, which can worsen pollution in frontline communities. The document also calls for massive government investment in dangerous false solutions like nuclear and carbon capture and storage at a time when better, cheaper renewable options already exist. Friends of the Earth calls on Congress to support the bold actions we need, including a Green New Deal that ends the exploitation of fossil fuels.
