Each year, the federal government purchases ~$9 billion worth of food for U.S. troops and military bases, schools, food banks, veterans’ hospitals, and other federal foodservice and food purchasing programs. Friends of the Earth co-authored a groundbreaking report showing how these purchases have cascading impacts on every part of our food system, including a massive impact on the climate. Friends of the Earth provides technical assistance to interested federal food service operations to shift to climate-friendly menus and works with the Federal Good Food Purchasing Coalition to advocate for the federal government to align these purchases with its climate targets and offer nutritious, inclusive menus by shifting toward more plant-based and organic foods.
