In at least three previous State of the Union speeches, President Barack Obama placed great emphasis on his “all of the above” energy strategy — one that includes both aggressive pursuit of renewables and, to the chagrin of environmental and climate activists, rapid growth of domestic oil and gas production. Last night’s address, however, made only passing mention of the nation’s fossil fuel abundance, as the president sought to carve out a less equivocal stance on the threat of unchecked carbon dioxide emissions.
