Shell will have to change its summer oil-exploraton plans in the Chukchi Sea to comply with a letter of authorization released Tuesday by the Interior Department’s U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service,

To protect walruses, the authorization calls for Shell to keep operating drill rigs at least 15 miles apart during the summer season in the Chukchi.

Shell developed an operating plan that sets two wells — drilled simultaneously — about nine miles apart.
